Today I had my first lot of chemo. I was so scared I didn't want to have it done but I had to think that it is getting me better and that is the main thing! By the time it got today, I had got so sick of everything. All the tons of information I've had to take in and all the things I have had to think about have got too much and I just wanted to shut off.
The line in my chest was doing my head in and even though it is to help me not keep having needles, it still got to me a lot. I really wanted to rip it out if I am honest and that properly sounds terrible but having it here is really hard to think about and deal with.
Today's treatment went really well though, was very surprised at how well. I had the drugs ABVD and they are the strongest type you can have. I am also the youngest patient in Little Aston which made me feel a bit more special
ABVD
A = Adriamycin (used to be called Doxorubicin)
B = Bleomycin
V = Vinblastine
D = Dacarbazine
I also had Glucose and Saline to help the drugs go round my body.
Two of the drugs are pumped through a drip for about an hour and half and the other two drugs are injected straight into my vein through the line. The two drugs straight into the line are a lot stronger than the ones through the drip and there is less volume as well.
Drugs to take home:
Allopurinol 300mg - Reduction of uric acid during chemo
Metodopramide 10mg - Nausea
Rautidine 150mg - Reduces stomach acid
Ondanstron 8mg - Severe nausea and vomiting
The whole thing today was one experience I shall never forget. Having been so scared, after it was all over, there was really no need to have been. The nurse was so lovely and mum was there holding my hand while it was going on. The only bit that hurt was having all the plaster and dressing taken off where the hole in my chest is, cleaned and flushed and then moved about to connect to the drip.
The weirdest feeling was when the drugs were been pumped through the line. Because my line in my chest hasn't settled into my body yet, I could feel all the liquid going up the tube and all around my chest and at some point it was very cold and very uncomfortable. It was very weird.
The funny bit was going to the toilet!! Because the drip is on wheels you can move about and take it around with you, so I had to wheel it with me to the loo while mum held the drip up and the bit connected to me in case I got it caught, was so funny and then it started to bleep!
Back home now and I'm feeling ok. They said it will take the next few days to kick in and then I will be able to see how my body reacts to all the drugs. I could be tired and not be able to get out of bed and then I could not be but I could also be ill and want to throw up but the anti-sickness pills they have given me will try and stop that.
At the moment I really don't know how I am feeling, today was a big day, so I'm not sure if it has sunk in yet, but I guess we shall see. Can't wait to get into bed, I ache all over and feel like I have been in the wars.
